Singapore added to Foals’ 5-date Asian tour

Singapore has stepped in as a replacement date for English indie rock band Foals this March, upon the cancellation of Bangkok’s Silverlake Music Festival.

This follows the announcement of the band’s KL show as part of the launch of a new series of live shows in Malaysia called Upfront Arena. It is certainly shaping up to be an exciting month, with a slew of gigs including the Mosaic Music Festival, Baths, Fantastic Day, Future Music Festival Asia, and Au Revoire Simone occurring within the month.

Following the success of their second album, Total Life Forever, Foals has gone on to win NME’s Best Track Award for ‘Spanish Sahara’, before bagging the award again in 2013 for ‘Inhaler’, the lead single off their third and most recent album, Holy Fire — but they don’t stop there.

In 2012, the band released Tapes, a dancefloor oriented mixtape as part of the K7! series, showcasing their taste in electronic music. As some might know, keyboardist Edwin Congreave DJs and releases house music under a record label that he runs with Jack Savidge of Friendly Fires.

Foals will tour Asia on the back of their UK dates, with three shows in Japan before heading to Singapore and KL. It will be the band’s second time in Singapore since their performance at the inaugural Laneway Festival Singapore in 2011.

Malaysia’s Upfront Arena launches with Foals in KL

Leading KL venue The Bee has just announced that it will be launching a brand new series of live shows called Upfront Arena this March, kicking off with acclaimed Oxford band Foals.

The series is an extension of the venue’s current Upfront series. While Upfront will continue to bring “up-and-coming” international live acts such as Mac DeMarco, Grimes, and Ra Ra Riot to The Bee; Upfront Arena will present “bigger names in bigger venues”, with Foals a perfect fit to launch the new series.

Hailing from Oxford, England, the band was formed by longtime friends Yannis Philippakis (guitar) and Jack Bevan (drums), along with Andrew Mears on vocals, guitarist Jimmy Smith, and bassist Walter Gervers.

The quintet aimed to stand out from the other “proggier” bands in Oxford, and began playing at house parties around the area. It wasn’t long until their poppy, jittery, upbeat, math rock/post-punk sound reached the radar of Transgressive Records, who have released all three of the band’s albums to date.

Debut album Antidotes was released in 2008, followed by Total Life Forever in 2010 and Holy Fire in 2013, all to critical acclaim, earning the band legions of fans all over the world.
